India Launches ‘Adi Vaani’ Beta to Translate and Preserve Adivasi Languages

Officials describe the publicly funded AI tool as a frugal approach to strengthening tribal language preservation.

Overview

  • The Ministry of Tribal Affairs unveiled the beta app and website in New Delhi on September 1, enabling translation between Hindi or English and Bhili, Gondi, Mundari, and Santali.
  • Support for Kui and Garo is planned next, and Google Play availability is expected from Friday with iOS to follow, according to officials and reporting.
  • An IIT-Delhi–led consortium with BITS-Pilani and IIIT Naya Raipur built the system in collaboration with State Tribal Research Institutes.
  • More than 250 native speakers, educators, and community leaders contributed validated corpora, with integrated NCERT and CIIL primers and OCR for learning materials.
  • The ministry says the platform was built at about one-tenth the cost of commercial options, includes a feedback mechanism for iterative improvement, and will be promoted through the Adi Karmayogi initiative.
