India Launches ‘Adi Vaani’ Beta, an AI Translator for Tribal Languages

Built by an IIT-led consortium, the app will be stress-tested through Adi Karmayogi to improve accuracy from real-world use.

Overview

  • The beta is publicly released on Google Play with web access, while officials say the Apple App Store will host it as well and a ministry statement describes iOS as coming soon.
  • Launch communications differ on initial coverage, with one statement listing Bhili, Mundari, Gondi and Santali and officials also naming Kui and Garo.
  • Each supported language is backed by a corpus exceeding 100,000 sentences compiled with help from schoolteachers, professors, researchers and community leaders.
  • Model training drew on publicly available material, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speeches and community folklore and songs, and officials say validation met international accuracy benchmarks.
  • The tool targets real-time speech and text translation between Hindi or English and tribal languages, adds learning features and OCR, and will collect in-app and portal feedback during Adi Karmayogi for iterative improvements.
