India Launches 10-Year Plan to Train 50,000 Northeast Youth and Boost Inland Waterways

Overview

  • Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal formalized targets to train and employ 50,000 youth through the newly established Northeast Skill Development Centre and a maritime training institute in Dibrugarh.
  • The ministry approved four Brahmaputra lighthouses in Guwahati, Dibrugarh, Silghat and Biswanath to provide weather forecasts, climate monitoring and tourist viewpoints.
  • Eighty-five community jetties will be built along Assam’s rivers to enhance passenger and cargo movement across the state.
  • A three-city water metro connecting Guwahati, Dibrugarh and Tezpur has been greenlit to boost river-based tourism and local transit.
  • Germany-based Rhenus Logistics will roll out up to 100 Burgess vessels over the next two years after confirming the navigability of the Brahmaputra, Barak and Ganga rivers.
