India Issues MAFLD Guidelines and Orders Nationwide Screenings

This initiative will detect silent metabolic liver disease before progression, offering targeted risk management for urban professionals alongside rural communities.

Overview

  • The Health Ministry has incorporated MAFLD guidelines into its National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases and directed states and union territories to conduct mass screenings with risk stratification and referral protocols.
  • A low-cost, non-invasive four-test screening algorithm developed by AIG Hospitals and the Indian School of Business is now operational in rural Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
  • Union Health Minister JP Nadda cited a Nature Scientific Reports study showing 84.06% of 345 Hyderabad IT workers had elevated liver fat and 34.20% met criteria for metabolic syndrome.
  • An ICMR-led IMELD study in Rajasthan villages found fatty liver disease in 37.19% of participants, with weekly fast-food consumption raising risk particularly among men.
  • Complementary efforts include primary care through Ayushman Arogya Mandir, FSSAI liver health campaigns on social media, Fit India movement exercises and Ministry of Ayush–led yoga programmes.
