India Issues First National Standard for Bomb Disposal Systems With IS 19445:2025

The BIS benchmark fills a gap left by restricted foreign norms, providing India-specific test methods for blast and splinter protection.

Overview

  • BIS notified IS 19445:2025 on December 27, 2025, establishing performance evaluation focused on blast loads and splinter effects.
  • The Consumer Affairs Ministry says adoption is voluntary for procurement agencies, manufacturers and accredited testing bodies.
  • Developed at the request of the Home Affairs Ministry with TBRL/DRDO, the standard details required test equipment, range conditions and evaluation procedures.
  • Prepared under BIS’s Arms and Ammunition for Civilian Use Sectional Committee, a dedicated panel drew inputs from defence, internal security and industry stakeholders.
  • The benchmark is intended to unify evaluations, guide procurement and support quality-focused domestic production of systems such as bomb blankets, baskets and inhibitors.
