India Issues Advisory on Kidnapping Scams Luring Job Seekers to Iran

The Ministry of External Affairs warned that Iran’s visa-free entry for Indians applies only to tourism, with employment offers tied to visa-free travel flagged as potential criminal traps.

Overview

  • The Sept. 19 advisory cites multiple recent cases in which Indians were enticed by fake job or onward-placement promises and then abducted in Iran for ransom.
  • Citizens are urged to exercise the “strictest vigilance” and to avoid agents claiming visa-free employment access or routing to third countries.
  • One reported victim, 26-year-old Himanshu Mathur of Delhi, was allegedly kidnapped in Chabahar and released after his family paid Rs 20 lakh.
  • Mathur returned to Delhi on Sept. 7, and police registered a kidnapping and criminal conspiracy case as investigations progress.
  • The Iranian Embassy previously said it was examining similar missing-persons reports and advised against engaging unauthorised recruiters.
