Overview

  • ICMR’s National Institute of Virology in Pune has ramped up whole-genome sequencing of RT-PCR positive samples from 73 virus research and diagnostic laboratories nationwide.
  • Two monovalent Omicron-based vaccines—Corbivax and COVOVAX—are currently deployed to bolster immunity against emerging strains.
  • NIV scientists have isolated four new Omicron sub-variants to assess their characteristics and inform potential vaccine updates.
  • Genomic data show the April upsurge was driven by the JN.1.16 sub-lineage before being overtaken in May by the XFG (LF.7 + LP.81.2) recombinant strain.
  • As of June 18 India reported 6,483 active COVID-19 cases and 113 deaths, and states have been directed to secure oxygen, ventilators, isolation beds and essential medicines.
