India Hosts 58,134 International Students in 2023–24

Rising undergraduate intake and government internationalisation policies help explain the growth in foreign enrolments.

Overview

  • The Ministry of Education's AISHE 2023-24 report, released July 12, records 58,134 foreign students from 173 countries enrolled in Indian higher-education institutions.
  • Nearly one in four foreign students came from Nepal, which supplied 24.1% of the total, and the top 10 source countries together accounted for about 64% of enrolments.
  • Karnataka was the leading host state with 7,914 international students, narrowly ahead of Punjab at 7,902, showing a regional reshuffle in destinations.
  • Undergraduate programmes accounted for 73.6% of foreign enrolments with 42,779 students, and male students outnumbered female students in absolute terms.
  • Foreign enrolment rose 18.9% since 2019–20 and about 47% over the past decade, a trend linked to the Study in India programme, the NEP push for internationalisation, and growing institutional overseas ties that will affect capacity and planning.
