Overview

  • The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved a ₹2,157 crore project to upgrade the 46 km MarakkanamPuducherry stretch of NH-332A to a four-lane highway under Hybrid Annuity Mode.
  • The plan divides the route into an 11 km widening of the existing roadway and a 35 km greenfield bypass to divert heavy commercial traffic from Puducherry city.
  • The alignment will integrate with National Highways 32 and 332, State Highways 136 and 203, and link Chennai and Puducherry airports, Puducherry and Chinnababusamudram railway stations, plus Cuddalore minor port.
  • Detailed project reports and alignment planning are underway ahead of a two-year build aimed at decongesting a key transport corridor and enhancing road safety.
  • Construction is expected to generate around 8 lakh person-days of direct and 10 lakh person-days of indirect employment while boosting tourism and industrial connectivity along the east coast.
