Overview
- Officials formalised seven regional defence clusters and assigned themes to each cluster after stakeholder talks, with states and institutions asked to prepare detailed vision documents and implementation roadmaps.
- Defence Production Secretary Sanjeev Kumar led consultations that took place on June 2 and June 10 and officials say the clusters were formalised by June 22.
- The clusters will be led by designated states with co-leads and will draw on defence public sector firms, private industry and IITs for research, testing, skills and innovation support.
- Each cluster is to focus on a discrete function such as testing and certification, indigenisation, exports, skills development or industrial infrastructure rather than duplicating existing corridors.
- The plan is presented as an Aatmanirbhar Bharat measure to cut imports and grow defence exports, but funding, legal approvals and concrete implementation timelines have not yet been finalised.
