India Fixes Census 2027 Dates for Most Areas with Manipur Deferred

Designed to prevent clashes with assembly polls as well as winter access limits, the timetable sets a uniform March 1 reference date.

Overview

  • The Ministry of Home Affairs issued a Gazette notification on October 30, 2026 that sets house-to-house population enumeration for most of India from January 25 to February 28, 2027.
  • Citizens will be able to self-enumerate online from January 10 to January 24, 2027 before the door-to-door count begins.
  • The notification excludes five poll-bound states and several snow-bound areas from the January–February window and defers the schedule for Manipur until further orders.
  • A revisional round to verify and correct entries is scheduled for March 1 to March 5, 2027 and the official reference time for all records is 00:00 hours on March 1, 2027.
  • The two-phase Census 2027 follows a Union Cabinet-approved outlay of about Rs 11,718 crore and is the first full national headcount since the 2011 census after the 2021 exercise was postponed due to COVID-19.
