India Faces Hotter Summer With Heatwaves and Weather Alerts

The IMD predicts above-normal temperatures and increased heatwave days from April to June, with rainfall and thunderstorm warnings issued for early April in several regions.

  • The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts a hotter-than-usual summer across India, with two to four additional heatwave days expected in central, eastern, and northwestern regions.
  • Above-normal maximum and minimum temperatures are predicted for most parts of the country, except isolated areas in the northwest and northeast.
  • Yellow and orange alerts for rainfall, thunderstorms, and hailstorms have been issued for regions including Mumbai, Karnataka, and Madhya Pradesh from April 1 to April 4.
  • India's peak electricity demand is projected to rise by 9-10% this summer, potentially reaching a record 270 gigawatts due to increased heat stress.
  • Authorities are implementing heat action plans and advising measures such as cooling centers and urban heat island mitigation to protect vulnerable populations.
