India Extradites Ganesh Shenoy to Long Island to Face 2005 Manslaughter Charge

The transfer marks the first U.S.-bound extradition from India since 2017 following a coordinated federal-diplomatic push.

Overview

  • U.S. Marshals removed Shenoy from custody in Mumbai on Sept. 25 and returned him to New York with support from the Justice Department and the U.S. Embassy.
  • He was arraigned in Nassau County, pleaded not guilty to second-degree manslaughter, was ordered held without bail, and is due back in court Oct. 14.
  • Prosecutors allege he ran a red light at roughly 75–84 mph in a 40 mph zone, T-boning Philip Mastropolo’s car and propelling it about 65 feet into a box truck.
  • Authorities say he fled to India 14 days after the crash despite surrendering his documents, obtained a replacement passport, and fought extradition for about 18 years.
  • If convicted, he faces up to 15 years in prison, and Mastropolo’s adult children attended the arraignment as the long-stalled case resumed.
