Overview
- The Ministry of Finance extended the import duty exemption on cotton (HS 5201) from September 30 to December 31, 2025, after first waiving it for August 19–September 30.
- The government says the move ensures adequate supplies for the domestic textile industry and supports exporters facing steep US tariffs.
- AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal accused the Centre of bowing to pressure from President Donald Trump and called the duty removal a betrayal of farmers.
- Kejriwal claimed US cotton would be roughly Rs 15–20 per kg cheaper and argued pre-October purchases by mills could undercut Indian growers when their crop arrives.
- He demanded reinstatement of the 11% duty and advocated up to 100% tariffs on US imports, announcing a Kisan Jan Sabha in Chotila, Gujarat, on September 7 to mobilise opposition.
