India Drafts Rule to Require Acoustic Alerts on Electric Cars, Buses and Trucks From 2026

The proposal targets higher pedestrian risk from near-silent EVs by mandating low-speed warning sounds compliant with AIS-173.

Overview

  • MoRTH’s draft mandates Acoustic Vehicle Alerting Systems on electrified Category M and N vehicles, starting with new models on October 1, 2026 and extending to existing models in production on October 1, 2027.
  • The warning sound would switch on below about 20 km/h and when reversing, then turn off at higher speeds when tire and wind noise is sufficient.
  • Electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers and e-rickshaws are excluded from the proposed requirement.
  • The systems must meet AIS-173 audibility standards, aligning India with rules already in force in Europe, Japan and the United States, and several models on sale in India already include AVAS.
  • The draft package also proposes removing the mandatory spare-tyre requirement for vehicles fitted with tubeless tyres.
