India Deactivates Over 2 Crore Aadhaar Numbers of Deceased in Database Clean‑Up

The authority matched death registrations across national and state systems to curb identity fraud.

Overview

  • UIDAI confirmed on November 26 that it has disabled more than 2 crore Aadhaar numbers belonging to deceased individuals to protect the integrity of the ID system and benefits delivery.
  • Records were cross‑checked with data from the Registrar General of India, state and UT authorities, the Public Distribution System, and the National Social Assistance Programme before deactivation.
  • The myAadhaar portal’s ‘report death of a family member’ feature is live in 25 states and UTs using the Civil Registration System, allowing authenticated relatives to submit the Aadhaar and Death Registration Number for verification.
  • UIDAI says Aadhaar numbers are never reassigned and has published procedures for people to seek reactivation if a number is wrongly marked as belonging to a deceased person.
  • The agency is seeking data‑sharing arrangements with banks and other institutions, and independent experts caution that inconsistent death‑registration data in some regions could lead to erroneous deactivations.
