Overview
- A 10-member Task Force chaired by NITI Aayog programme director Yugal Kishore Joshi was announced by the government on Tuesday, September 15, 2026 to assess revival of Formula One and to prepare a coordinated motorsports roadmap.
- The committee includes senior officials from sports, commerce and tourism departments, representatives from the tax boards CBIC and CBDT, state governments of Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, circuit owners at Buddh and Madras, and the national motorsport body FMSCI.
- Its remit is to examine taxation and regulatory barriers, circuit readiness, infrastructure and safety needs, operational costs and possible public‑private partnership models while quantifying international, tourism and investment benefits.
- No race deal has been signed and work is at the evaluation stage, with officials noting Formula 1 requires significant investment and recurring hosting fees that media commonly cite in the roughly $20–60 million a year range for a Grand Prix.
- India last hosted the Indian Grand Prix from 2011 to 2013 before it was dropped over taxation and financial issues, and the Task Force’s recommendations will determine whether those past obstacles can be cleared in time to aim for a 2028 return.
