Overview
- MoRTH has formed the Empowered Committee for Ropeways Technical Evaluation, Certification and Safety (EC-Rope-TECS) to develop standards and certification systems for ropeways and allied components.
- The committee will be chaired by the Director General (Road Development and Special Secretary) and include senior officials from MoRTH, the Bureau of Indian Standards, states and union territories, experts from premier institutions, industry veterans and the Commissioner of Ropeway Systems Safety.
- EC-Rope-TECS is tasked with devising technical codes, commissioning protocols and safety audit procedures to manage risks and ensure compliance across new ropeway projects.
- The initiative supports the National Ropeways Development Programme – Parvatmala, launched in the 2022 Budget to deliver over 250 PPP ropeway projects spanning 1,200 km in five years.
- Preparatory studies for project feasibility and environmental impact assessments in hilly and remote regions are already underway.
