India Confirms Natural Gas Occurrence at Andaman’s Sri Vijayapuram 2 Well

Appraisal will now test commercial potential, reinforcing the government’s deepwater exploration drive.

  • Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri disclosed the finding in a post on X on September 26.
  • Initial production testing between 2,212 and 2,250 metres established the presence of gas with intermittent flaring.
  • Gas samples shipped to Kakinada were analyzed and found to contain 87% methane.
  • The well lies about 17 km off the Andaman east coast in 295 metres of water with a planned depth of 2,650 metres.
  • Officials said pool size and commercial viability will be evaluated in the coming months in coordination with deepwater partners including Petrobras, BP India, Shell, and ExxonMobil.
