India Conducts First Rail-Mobile Test of Agni-Prime Missile

Rail mobility signals a shift toward more survivable, rapid-reaction deterrence.

Overview

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh confirmed the successful, first-of-its-kind launch from a specially designed rail-based mobile platform.
  • DRDO carried out the flight with the Strategic Forces Command and the Armed Forces from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the Odisha coast.
  • The launcher can move across the national rail network without preconditions, enabling cross-country mobility, short reaction times, and reduced visibility.
  • Agni-Prime is a two-stage, canisterised, nuclear-capable intermediate-range missile with a 1,000–2,000 km envelope and guidance via ring-laser gyro INS, MINS, and optional GPS/NaVIC.
  • The test places India among a select group with rail-mobile canisterised launch systems, following earlier Agni trials this year, with further user validation and induction steps reported to follow.
