India Completes Akash-NG User Trials, Clearing Path to Air-Defense Induction

The upgrade introduces a longer reach with a smaller, canisterised footprint.

Overview

  • DRDO said the user evaluation trials met all PSQR benchmarks, with interceptions proven from near-boundary low altitude to long-range high altitude.
  • The tests were conducted at the Integrated Test Range in Chandipur and were witnessed by senior DRDO scientists alongside Indian Air Force user representatives.
  • Akash-NG employs an indigenous RF seeker, a dual-pulse solid rocket motor, and Indian-built radars with command-and-control systems to counter diverse aerial threats.
  • The variant is reported to extend range to roughly 70 km compared with earlier 27–30 km versions, using canisterised missiles and a reduced ground footprint for quicker deployment.
  • Successful trials advance IAF acceptance steps toward induction and have drawn international interest in the system.
