India Commissions Two Nilgiri-Class Frigates in First Dual-Shipyard Ceremony

Modular, largely indigenous builds add long-range capability to the Eastern Fleet.

Overview

  • INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri entered service at Visakhapatnam on August 26, marking the first simultaneous commissioning of frontline combatants built at two different Indian shipyards.
  • Udaygiri was built by MDL and Himgiri by GRSE, delivered on July 1 and July 31 respectively, with Udaygiri achieving the class’s fastest post-launch delivery.
  • Displacing about 6,700 tonnes, the frigates use CODOG propulsion with IPMS and carry eight BrahMos missiles, 32 MRSAM cells, torpedo and rocket launchers, a 76 mm gun, AK-630 CIWS, and 12.7 mm mounts.
  • Sensors include the MF-STAR AESA radar, LANZA-N 3D air-surveillance radar, and BEL HUMSA-NG sonar, with roughly 75% indigenous content sourced from Indian industry and MSMEs.
  • Designed by the Navy’s Warship Design Bureau as its 100th and 101st Indian-built warships, the Project 17A program continues with remaining ships under construction and deliveries expected progressively through 2026, while a follow-on Project 17B is being prepared per Naval News.
