India Commissions Twin Project 17A Frigates INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri in Visakhapatnam

Overview

  • Tuesday’s event marked the first time two frontline surface combatants built at different Indian shipyards were commissioned together, with both ships joining the Eastern Fleet.
  • INS Udaygiri was built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders in Mumbai and INS Himgiri by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers in Kolkata, showcasing parallel production capability.
  • Udaygiri is the Warship Design Bureau’s 100th design and the fastest of its class to be delivered post-launch, aided by modular construction methods.
  • The Project 17A frigates displace about 6,700 tonnes and field CODOG propulsion, advanced indigenous sensors, and weapons including supersonic anti-ship and medium-range air-defense missiles.
  • Each ship has roughly 75% indigenous content sourced through an ecosystem of 200+ MSMEs that supported about 4,000 direct and more than 10,000 indirect jobs.
