Overview

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh commissioned the Project 17A multi-mission stealth frigates at the Eastern Naval Command in Visakhapatnam on August 26.
  • This marks the first simultaneous commissioning of frontline surface combatants built at two different Indian shipyards.
  • INS Udaygiri, built by MDL in Mumbai, and INS Himgiri, built by GRSE in Kolkata, will join the Eastern Fleet; Udaygiri is the Warship Design Bureau’s 100th design and the fastest of her class delivered post‑launch.
  • The 6,700‑tonne frigates use CODOG propulsion with an integrated platform management system and field supersonic surface‑to‑surface missiles, medium‑range SAMs, a 76 mm gun, close‑in weapon systems and anti‑submarine suites.
  • Officials frame the twin commissioning as strengthening India’s maritime posture in the Indian Ocean Region through expanded blue‑water capability and greater self‑reliance.
