Overview
- INS Taragiri, commissioned on April 3 in Visakhapatnam by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, entered service as the fourth ship in the Project 17A frigate program.
- The 6,670-tonne warship features reduced radar signature and carries BrahMos supersonic anti-ship missiles, medium-range surface-to-air missiles, and an indigenous anti-submarine suite.
- The ship uses a Combined Diesel or Gas propulsion system for high-speed, long-endurance operations and integrates systems through an automated platform management setup.
- Designed by the Warship Design Bureau and built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders, the vessel includes more than 75% Indian-made components sourced from over 200 small and medium enterprises.
- Project 17A will field seven Nilgiri-class frigates built by MDL and GRSE, which naval leaders say will boost combat readiness and strengthen India’s presence across the Indian Ocean.
