Overview

  • THDC India Limited began commercial operation of the first 250 MW unit at the 1,000 MW Tehri Variable Speed Pumped Storage Plant on June 4, 2025.
  • The Tehri PSP is the largest pumped storage project developed by a Central Public Sector Enterprise and will raise the Tehri Hydro Power Complex’s capacity to 2,400 MW when all units are online.
  • GE Vernova supplied the power electronics and controls for the variable-speed turbine, enabling precise power flow management for peaking and grid balancing.
  • The new facility provides flexible peaking power and critical grid stabilization to support integration of intermittent renewable sources.
  • This project underpins India’s energy self-reliance strategy and contributes to the government’s target of 500 GW of renewable energy by 2030.
