India Carmakers Log Record January as SUVs, Exports and EVs Power Sales

Manufacturers shift to ramping output to fulfil strong bookings after the highest January wholesales on record.

  • Industry wholesales reached roughly 450,000 units in January 2026, the strongest January on record and the second-highest monthly tally ever.
  • Maruti Suzuki posted its highest-ever monthly sales at 236,963 units, including a record 51,020 exports, as utility vehicles offset softer small-car volumes.
  • Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles recorded 71,066 total units, up about 47% year-on-year, with EV sales at 9,052 units rising 72.7%.
  • Mahindra reported 104,309 total vehicles, up 24% year-on-year, with 63,510 domestic SUVs and 93,689 bookings for XUV7XO and XEV 9S in four hours on January 14.
  • Hyundai achieved record domestic wholesales of 59,107 units and total sales of 73,137, while the Tata Nexon led the model charts with 23,365 units.
