India, Canada Open Reset With NSA Talks in New Delhi

The meetings set out concrete steps to revive stalled channels across multiple sectors, with counterterror cooperation placed at the center.

Overview

  • NSA Ajit Doval met Canadian National Security and Intelligence Adviser Nathalie Drouin on September 18 in New Delhi for regular bilateral security consultations, the MEA confirmed.
  • Both sides agreed to strengthen cooperation on counterterrorism, transnational organised crime and intelligence exchanges, reinforcing existing mechanisms of engagement.
  • Indian officials raised concerns over pro‑Khalistan activities in Canada and threats to diplomats and missions, and the MEA underscored the host government’s responsibility for diplomatic security.
  • Pre‑Foreign Office Consultations on September 19, led by P. Kumaran and David Morrison, agreed to reactivate dialogue mechanisms across trade, defence, energy, civil nuclear, critical minerals, space, S&T and agriculture.
  • Officials noted the talks follow the Modi–Carney understanding at the G7 and welcomed the return of high commissioners, while the Nijjar case proceeds separately in court and was not the focus of the discussions.
