India Builds Road Over Mig La at 19,400 Feet, Claiming World’s Highest Motorable Route

  • The Border Roads Organisation announced completion of the Likaru–Mig La–Fukche route, reaching Mig La at 19,400 feet in eastern Ladakh.
  • Officials say the pass surpasses the Umling La road at 19,024 feet, previously described as the highest motorable road.
  • The route is presented as a third axis from Hanle to Fukche and is reported to run about three kilometres from the Line of Actual Control.
  • Project Himank’s chief engineer, Brig Vishal Srivastava, led a team that hoisted the national flag at Mig La to mark the opening.
  • Work began in August 2023 on roughly 64 kilometres with an allocation of about Rs 520 crore, and final blacktop surfacing remains underway.
