Overview
- The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology notified on September 21 that “screen protectors for smartphones” are added to the Electronics and IT Goods (Requirement of Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021.
- Products must meet the Bureau of Indian Standards specification IS 19348:2025, which sets rules for glass size, strength, light transmission, visible defects and packaging that lists maker and batch details.
- The new obligation becomes mandatory on April 1, 2027, giving manufacturers and importers a transition period to obtain testing and certification before products can be sold.
- Regulators will need to expand accredited lab capacity, speed certification processes and set customs and marketplace checks before enforcement is effective, and detailed implementation guidance is still pending.
- Analysts say compliance costs will likely push low‑end unbranded protectors out of the market, favor organised domestic suppliers and prompt consolidation as firms such as Optiemus Infracom scale capacity.
