India Braces for Warm Winter as IMD Predicts Fewer Cold Wave Days

The India Meteorological Department forecasts above-normal temperatures and reduced cold wave events across much of the country for December to February.

  • The IMD predicts above-normal minimum and maximum temperatures across most of India this winter, except for some parts of south Peninsular India where temperatures may be normal or below normal.
  • Fewer cold wave days are expected this winter, with northwest, central, east, and northeast India likely to see 2-4 fewer cold wave days compared to the average of 5-6 days.
  • November 2024 was the second warmest November in India since 1901 for day temperatures, and the warmest for northwest India in terms of mean temperatures.
  • Delhi and northwest India are experiencing an unusually mild start to December, with above-normal temperatures and no significant cold air influx due to weak western disturbances.
  • Rainfall in December is forecast to be above normal in peninsular and west-central India, while north and northwest India are likely to see normal to below-normal rainfall.
