India Blocks Thousands of Accounts Linked to Digital Fraud
The government has taken action against cybercrime by blocking 59,000 WhatsApp accounts, 1,700 Skype IDs, and millions of SIM cards and IMEIs used for fraudulent activities.
- The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) has blocked over 59,000 WhatsApp accounts and 1,700 Skype IDs linked to digital fraud schemes, according to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
- More than 6.69 lakh SIM cards and 1.32 lakh IMEIs, reported by police as involved in cybercrime, have also been deactivated by the government as of November 15, 2024.
- The government has launched a public awareness campaign to educate citizens about digital fraud, using newspaper ads, social media influencers, and public service announcements in metro stations and on radio.
- A new system has been implemented to block international spoofed calls that appear to originate from within India, a tactic frequently used in scams such as fake digital arrests and impersonation of officials.
- The I4C has also introduced a suspect registry and a 'Report and Check Suspect' feature on its cybercrime portal to help citizens verify potential cybercriminals and report fraudulent activities effectively.
