India Blocks Five OTT Platforms Over Alleged Obscene Content

Officials used Section 69A to order network blocking with app‑store takedowns after finding the services violated obscenity laws.

Overview

  • The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting ordered MoodXVIP, Koyal Playpro, Digi Movieplex, Feel and Jugnu to be blocked following due process.
  • ISPs were directed to disable access under the IT Act and IT Rules, 2021, and the apps were removed from Google Play and the Apple App Store.
  • Officials cited violations of Sections 67 and 67A of the IT Act, Section 292 of the IPC and the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act.
  • Authorities said the platforms hosted content with sexual innuendo, prolonged nudity and pornographic scenes lacking meaningful context.
  • The move continues a broader crackdown that included blocking about 25 OTT services in July 2025, though checks found at least one platform still offering an Android APK download, highlighting enforcement gaps.
