Overview
- Opposition MPs from the INDIA bloc marched toward the Election Commission on Tuesday, October 6, to protest the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and demand accountability from the poll panel.
- Police deployed more than 3,000 personnel, set up barricades around Parliament and the EC, and stopped leaders including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra near the NITI Aayog office as crowd control measures were enforced.
- Delhi Traffic Police put special traffic arrangements in place from 8:00 a.m. on routes through Connaught Place, Patel Chowk, Parliament Street, Jantar Mantar and adjoining roads and urged commuters to use the Metro and avoid the area.
- Barricades and diversions produced long, slow-moving traffic across Lutyens’ Delhi that left many commuters stranded or switching to the Metro, while a separate truck fire on Vande Mataram Marg added a lingering carriageway blockage.
- The INDIA bloc alleges SIR irregularities and has called for the Chief Election Commissioner’s resignation while the Election Commission says SIR decisions were taken unanimously, a dispute that could prolong protests and further disrupt central Delhi.
