India Begins Two-Year Real-World Trial of Toyota’s Hydrogen Mirai

The NISE-led evaluation will test the fuel-cell sedan across India for two years to inform policy and deployment.

Overview

  • Toyota Kirloskar Motor signed an MoU to hand over a Mirai fuel-cell vehicle to the National Institute of Solar Energy for real-world testing.
  • Union Minister Pralhad Joshi drove the hydrogen-powered Mirai to the new Parliament complex to publicly showcase the technology, with MoS Shripad Yesso Naik in attendance.
  • The programme will assess performance across heat, dust, congestion and varied terrain to generate technical evidence for potential scale-up.
  • Officials framed the effort as zero-emission mobility that emits only water vapour and as a contributor to Energy Aatma Nirbharta and India’s climate goals under the Green Hydrogen Mission.
  • Toyota said the partnership supports the Green Hydrogen Mission, while Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari highlighted potential import savings and praised hydrogen as a clean, indigenous option.
