India Begins Construction of First All-Electric Port Tug Under Green Tug Transition Programme

Deendayal Port's 60-tonne, zero-emission tug marks the rollout phase of a programme targeting 50 units by 2030.

Overview

  • Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal virtually flagged off the initiative and launched the steel-cutting for the Deendayal Port Authority tug in Kandla.
  • The vessel is designed for a 60-ton bollard pull with all-electric propulsion to enable silent operations, zero direct carbon emissions and higher energy efficiency.
  • The Green Tug Transition Programme plans 16 tugs for deployment between 2024 and 2027 as part of a total goal of 50 by 2030.
  • Officials said work orders have been issued at four major ports, with Deendayal Port the first to commence construction.
  • Atreya Shipyard is building the tug, and the ceremony included participants from Netincon, Ripley and Kongsberg alongside ministry and port officials.
