India, Bangladesh Border Chiefs Sign Plan to Tighten Frontier Security

The document formalises real-time coordination to curb crime, aiming to reduce lethal incidents.

Overview

  • The 56th DG-level talks in Dhaka on August 25–28 concluded with a Joint Record of Discussions to curb illegal entries, prevent airspace violations and expand joint awareness and socio-economic initiatives.
  • Both sides affirmed adherence to procedures for Single Row Fence construction and other activities within 150 yards of the boundary, and agreed to facilitate Joint Rivers Commission–approved riverbank protection works.
  • BSF alleged BGB denies or delays taking back undocumented Bangladeshi entrants, citing about 550 handovers and roughly 2,400 verifications pending, while BGB accused Indian forces of push-ins of around 2,500 people.
  • Bangladesh raised concerns over killings at the frontier as BSF reiterated that firing occurs only in self-defence, pledged added precautions and intensified night patrols, and cited injuries to its personnel this year.
  • The forces committed to real-time intelligence sharing, zero tolerance toward insurgent groups and advising media against misleading reports, with BSF informing BGB it plans to equip troops with about 5,000 body-worn cameras.
