India, Bangladesh Border Chiefs Seal Cooperation Pact to Curb Illegal Crossings

Talks in Dhaka produced a Joint Record of Discussions that prioritizes real-time coordination to de-escalate recurring border frictions.

Overview

  • BSF and BGB concluded Aug 25–28 DG-level talks in Dhaka with a signed Joint Record of Discussions committing to tighter border security and real-time information sharing.
  • Both sides agreed to joint awareness drives, socio-economic measures in vulnerable areas, zero tolerance toward insurgent activity, and protocols to avoid airspace violations.
  • Procedural safeguards were reaffirmed for Single Row Fence construction and any work within 150 yards of the boundary, with facilitation of Joint River Commission–approved riverbank protection and referral of pending sites to higher authorities.
  • India flagged delays by BGB in accepting apprehended Bangladeshi nationals, while the BSF chief said 550 people were handed over so far and verification is ongoing in about 2,400 cases through established repatriation channels.
  • BGB pressed concerns over border killings; BSF said firing occurs only in self-defence and disclosed a plan to equip troops with about 5,000 body-worn cameras, with both forces agreeing to advise media against inflammatory coverage and to meet next in New Delhi around March 2026.
