India Auto Sales Set Records in October as Festive Buying and GST Cuts Power a Surge

Price reductions from late‑September GST changes drew buyers through the NavratriDiwali window.

  • Domestic car sales reached a monthly record of about 4.70 lakh in October, up 17% year on year, according to industry tallies.
  • Maruti Suzuki posted its highest-ever monthly total at 220,894 units, with domestic sales peaking at 180,675 units, the company’s filing showed.
  • Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles recorded 61,295 wholesales, its best month, with SUVs at a record 77% mix and EVs at 9,286 units, up 73% year on year; festive-period deliveries topped 1 lakh, up 33%.
  • Mahindra & Mahindra logged record SUV volumes at 71,624 units and total vehicle sales of 120,142, while Kia India hit a best-ever 29,556 and Toyota reported 42,892 total sales, up sharply from last year.
  • The tax reset moved many small cars to an 18% GST slab and removed the compensation cess, even as dispatches and Vahan registrations faced short-term logistics and reporting lags; two-wheelers also improved, with TVS at 5.43 lakh, up 11%.
