Overview

  • Bihar will host its first small modular reactor–based nuclear power plant alongside a 1,000 MW battery storage project as part of the national SMR rollout.
  • The 2025-26 budget allocates Rs 20,000 crore to the Nuclear Energy Mission to support research, development and deployment of SMRs by 2033.
  • New Delhi plans to establish at least one nuclear power plant in every state and reach 100 GW of nuclear capacity by 2047 to bolster energy security.
  • Odisha aims to source 61% of its power from non-fossil fuels by 2036 by adding over 11 GW of solar, wind, hydro and pumped storage capacity.
  • Meeting a projected 446 GW peak demand by 2034-35 will require about Rs 42 lakh crore in sector investments alongside reforms to cut distribution losses and expand storage.
