India Approves ₹20,000 Crore Netra MkII AWACS Programme

Detailed planning by DRDO in partnership with Airbus launches conversion of six ex-Air India A321s into airborne surveillance platforms

Overview

  • The Cabinet Committee on Security has ratified a ₹20,000 crore plan to convert six former Air India A321 jets into next-generation AWACS under the Netra MkII programme.
  • DRDO will lead the three-year development effort alongside Indian firms and Airbus to integrate indigenous AESA radars, mission consoles and support systems.
  • Each aircraft will undergo extensive structural modifications, including dorsal radome installation and auxiliary power upgrades, to enable full 360-degree radar coverage.
  • The new AWACS platforms will enhance the Indian Air Force’s long-range surveillance, command-and-control and battle-management capabilities over regional theatres.
  • By employing an Airbus platform for the first time in an indigenous AWACS role, India aims to join an exclusive club of nations and open the door to future export opportunities.
