Overview

  • Dr. Abhijat Sheth began a four-year term as National Medical Commission chair after Cabinet approval on July 11.
  • Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda oversaw a draw of lots on July 15–16 to select part-time members for the NMC and its four autonomous boards.
  • The draw produced 10 state and union territory nominees, nine council-nominated members, four board representatives and one expert for the search committee.
  • Six- to nine-month vacancies had previously halted in-person inspections and new college approvals during a CBI probe, leading to virtual assessments.
  • The restored panel positions aim to bolster governance and ensure regulatory continuity for forthcoming medical entrance exams and admissions.
