India and UK Launch Konkan-25 With Carrier Strike Groups in Western Indian Ocean

The carrier-on-carrier drills advance the IndiaUK Vision 2035 goal of deeper defence ties.

Overview

  • Both navies deployed full carrier strike groups led by INS Vikrant and HMS Prince of Wales in the first joint carrier-on-carrier exercise between the two countries.
  • The eight-day exercise runs from October 5 to 12 off India’s west coast in distinct harbour and sea phases.
  • The sea phase focuses on anti-air, anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare along with flying operations, cross-deck activities and other seamanship evolutions.
  • Japan’s JS Akebono and Norway’s HNoMS Roald Amundsen are participating as the UK Carrier Strike Group continues its Operation Highmast deployment.
  • Following Konkan-25, UK ships will make port calls in Mumbai and Goa before a one-day aerial defence drill with the Indian Air Force on October 14.
