India and Norway Expand Green Maritime Collaboration with Electric Ferries and Arctic Route Feasibility Study

Overview

  • On June 3, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Crown Prince Haakon inaugurated the India Pavilion at Nor-Shipping in Oslo to showcase India’s maritime heritage and forge industry alliances.
  • Bilateral talks on June 4 with Norway’s transport and fisheries ministers secured commitments to cooperate on ferry electrification, smart logistics, digital port ecosystems and clean coastal shipping.
  • India proposed a joint feasibility study with Norway to operationalise the Northern Sea Route, aiming to ensure safe and sustainable Arctic navigation.
  • Major shipbuilding MoUs were signed at the expo, including GRSE’s deal for additional hybrid-propulsion multipurpose vessels and L&T’s partnership with DNV on maritime infrastructure and digital solutions.
  • Both governments invited joint ventures in ocean renewable energy, sustainable fisheries, seafarer training and deep-sea exploration to strengthen the blue economy under green energy goals.
