India and Nigeria File Formal Bids to Host 2030 Commonwealth Games

An evaluation panel will review the proposals through in-person presentations in London ahead of a member vote in Glasgow in November.

Overview

  • Commonwealth Sport confirmed both bids were submitted by the August 31 deadline for the centenary edition.
  • India’s proposal names Ahmedabad as the preferred host city, while Abuja is widely reported as Nigeria’s likely venue and would mark the Games’ first staging in Africa.
  • The 2030 Evaluation Commission, chaired by Sandra Osborne, will assess the submissions, with members including Helen Phillips, Brendan Williams, Ian Reid and Andrew Ryan.
  • Findings will go to the Commonwealth Sport Executive Board, which will recommend a host for approval by 74 members at the General Assembly in Glasgow in late November.
  • Canada explored a 2030 bid but withdrew over budget concerns, as Commonwealth Sport advances a reworked, lower-cost model following recent host pullouts.
