Overview

  • Brazil has formally expressed interest in acquiring India’s Akash surface-to-air missile, Garuda artillery system, secure battlefield communications, offshore patrol vessels and support for its Scorpene-class submarines.
  • Indian and Brazilian officials are negotiating joint research and development projects, including co-production of an Embraer-Mahindra C-390 transport aircraft and collaboration on AWACS platforms.
  • These discussions mark a shift into formal procurement and co-production negotiations ahead of Prime Minister Modi’s July 5–8 BRICS visit to Brazil.
  • Talks are held under long-standing frameworks such as the 2003 Joint Defence Committee and the 2024 2+2 Political-Military Dialogue.
  • The partnership builds on the Akash system’s proven performance in May’s Operation Sindoor, where it repelled multiple drone and missile threats.
