India and Botswana Seal Cheetah Transfer Pact During Murmu’s First State Visit

The announcement anchors a wider Africa outreach that pairs health cooperation with conservation-focused partnerships.

Overview

  • Eight Kalahari cheetahs will be translocated to India under Project Cheetah, with five already placed in quarantine at Botswana’s Mokolodi reserve before transport in the coming months.
  • India and Botswana exchanged a health and pharmaceuticals MoU, and India will send a consignment of antiretroviral medicines at Gaborone’s request.
  • President Droupadi Murmu held delegation-level talks with President Duma Gideon Boko, with both sides agreeing to deepen cooperation across trade, investment, energy, agriculture, defence, education and digital technology.
  • Murmu’s trip is the first-ever state visit by an Indian head of state to both Angola and Botswana, capping talks in Angola where two MoUs were signed and Luanda agreed to join the International Big Cat Alliance and the Global Biofuel Alliance.
  • Murmu received a 21‑gun salute and guard of honour in Gaborone, and the two leaders planned a symbolic handover where captured cheetahs are released into quarantine ahead of relocation.
