India and Bhutan Unveil First Cross-Border Rail Links Totaling 89 km at ₹4,033 Crore

The lines are intended to connect Bhutan to India’s 150,000‑km rail network to streamline trade.

Overview

  • Two corridors were announced: Kokrajhar (Assam)–Gelephu and Banarhat (West Bengal)–Samtse.
  • A formal agreement is slated to be signed in New Delhi today during the Bhutanese foreign secretary’s visit.
  • Construction is planned over four years for KokrajharGelephu and three years for Banarhat–Samtse.
  • The KokrajharGelephu line includes six stations, two viaducts, 29 major bridges, 65 minor bridges, one flyover and 39 underpasses.
  • The Banarhat–Samtse line will have two stations, one major flyover, 24 minor flyovers and 37 underpasses, with India also reaffirming ₹10,000 crore support for Bhutan’s 13th Five-Year Plan.
