India and Australia Agree to Mutual Recognition of Organic Certifications

The pact is expected to cut duplicate certification, simplifying access to Australia for Indian organic exporters.

Overview

  • The arrangement will be implemented by India’s APEDA and Australia’s Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.
  • It covers organic products grown and processed in each country, including unprocessed plant products, processed foods and wine.
  • Officials say recognition of each other’s standards will reduce compliance hurdles and lower costs for certified producers and exporters.
  • India shipped $8.96 million of organic products to Australia in 2024–25 (2,781.58 tonnes), led by psyllium husk, coconut milk and rice.
  • Commerce secretary Sunil Barthwal urged robust labelling, penalties and capacity building to protect certification integrity during rollout.
