India Adopts ‘Viksit Gaon’ Blueprint, Raises Rural Home Target to Two Crore

The ministry will shift from wage payments to community-driven asset creation through integrated scheme convergence under the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision.

Overview

  • Union Minister of State Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar convened the Rural Development Ministry’s first Performance Review Committee and endorsed the Viksit Gaon framework as the cornerstone of the Viksit Bharat 2047 agenda.
  • The Viksit Gaon model sets standards for pucca housing, quality road connectivity, youth employment and women’s financial empowerment in every village.
  • The ministry has raised the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana–Gramin goal to build an additional two crore rural homes by 2029 on top of 3.22 crore units completed so far.
  • Officials were instructed to pivot MGNREGS from wage payments toward durable asset creation with community-led project selection and cross-scheme integration.
  • Under PMGSY, over 7.56 lakh kilometres of rural roads have been completed, and proposals include state-level maintenance funds and community-based monitoring for sustainability.
